Design for seated height
Test from the chair, not standing over the table. Most scan fails happen at 45 degrees in dim light.
One job for the square
The code opens the menu. Logo, hours, and Instagram belong around it, not inside a destroyed quiet zone.
Contrast, quiet zone, and error correction
Dark modules on a light background still scan more reliably than inverted fashion codes on black linen. If you invert, test twice as hard.
Leave a quiet zone of empty margin around the code. Crowding it with script type or a photo collage is the most common independent-restaurant fail.
High error correction helps when laminate scratches. It does not save a 12 millimeter code buried in a footer.
Skip heavy filters on the modules
Gradient fills and tiny logos in the center look premium in Illustrator and fail on mid-range Androids.
Matte laminate beats gloss
